THIBODAUX – Nicholls State University signed current head football coach Charlie Stubbs to a three-year contract on Monday, pending approval by the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System. The contract is a first for a Colonel football coach.
“We are extremely pleased with the progress our football program has made under the leadership of Charlie Stubbs,†said athletic director Rob Bernardi. “Coach Stubbs has demonstrated his ability to turn around a program and we would like to keep him here as our coach.â€
With the beginning of spring football practice set for Wednesday, Stubbs begins his second year at the helm of the Colonel football program. Stubbs came to Nicholls following an impressive career as an assistant coach at several top programs from around the country - including Oregon State University, the University of Alabama, Tulsa University, University of Louisville and BYU.
Stubbs spent his first season laying down a firm foundation to build on as the Colonels finished 4-7 with three wins verses Southland Conference opponents.
“For Nicholls to have someone of Charlie Stubbs’ caliber in terms of experience, commitment to academics and knowledge of the game is a tremendous advantage to our student-athletes,†said Nicholls State University President Dr. Stephen Hulbert.
After a successful recruiting class that featured 17 local prospects, Stubbs and his staff feel optimistic that the team will take another positive step forward in Southland Conference play this season.
“I have a vision for this program to compete at the championship level, both on the field and in the classroom,†said Coach Stubbs. “With the signing of this contract, it brings stability to our present football program and our future recruiting endeavors.â€
The Colonels open the 2011 football season on Thursday, September 1 at home against Evangel University. For season ticket information contact the Nicholls ticket office at (985) 448-4791.
