Tyrann Mathieu checked into Right Step Alcohol & Drug Center in Houston on Monday, reports Jen Hale of Fox 8.
Hale says the Mathieu family decided together that the "Honey Badger" will remain at the drug rehab center "for the near future" instead of returning to classes at LSU or any other college in order to play football this fall.
LSU announced last Friday that the New Orleans native was no longer a member of the football team due to violation of team and school policy.
Hale also reports that former NBA guard and coach John Lucas, who battled drug problems during his playing career before eventually helping others battle the same demons, is now mentoring Mathieu daily at the rehab facility.
LSU head coach Les Miles denied previous reports that he had met personally Mathieu earlier this week. Miles confirmed that the pair did share a phone conversation Tuesday night in which Miles said he told the 2011 Heisman finalist "just to make a great decision. Do the right things. He'll do that."
Whether Mathieu might be able to return to the LSU football team in 2013 still has not been addressed definitively by the school or athletic department.
