DRAGONS REBOUND FROM OPENING LOSS FOR TWO WINS:
The Boys and Girls Kangaroos of New York defeated the Wenonah Dragons of Alabama, 67-53. The Kangaroos used a 17-1 run in the 4th quarter to put the game out of reach.
Going into the 4th, the score was 45-43 and was either team's game to win. Boys and Girls 6th man, Courtney Darnley, had other plans for Kangaroos by scoring 5 quick points. Boys and Girls attacked on defense and forced turnovers which led them to a 17-1 run which would eventually seal the victory.
"It was our defense that got us on that 17-1 run," said Coach Ruth Lovelace. "I knew we had a run in us, I just didn't know when it was going to come out late in the game and was able to give us a comfortable lead to close out the game."
Darnley scored 10 points in the game and played a huge role in the run. "In order to be successful team, you have to have guys that can come off the bench and provide," said Coach Lovelace. "I thought he was our spark off the bench tonight."
Leroy Fludd played a solid game for the Kangaroos scoring 15 points, snagging eight rebounds, and came up with three steals. "He's been doing it all year," said Lovelace. "What you are seeing out of Fludd, is pretty much what you see on a nightly basis."
Wenonah's Chase Saddler had a solid game, scoring 19 points for the Dragons.
The game came down to points in the paint and points off turnovers. The Kangaroos outscored the Dragons in the paint 28-16. Boys and Girls also took advantage off of turnovers better by converting for 22 points, while Wenonah only scored 11.
"I thought we pulled it out in the end," said Lovelace. "I felt like our legs weren't under us early in the game. In the second half, especially in the 4th quarter, I thought we were able to pressure them a little bit and get some buckets in transition. Late in the game, our defense was creating our offense."
Boys and girls improves to 12-3 on the season, and Wenonah falls to 18-7.
