METAIRIE - Inclement weather chased the team indoors Sunday afternoon and prevented hundreds of fans from watching practice. The team is off Monday and will return to practice outdoors at 4 p.m. Tuesday (open to the public) in preparation for their pre-season opener against the San Francisco 49ers at 7 p.m. Friday at the Superdome.
Rookie running back Mark Ingram continues to impress. He turned a routine off-tackle play into a 50-yard touchdown run during practice Sunday, beating defensive backs safety Malcolm Jenkins and Patrick Robinson to the left pylon. Jenkins lunged at Ingram inside the 10 but missed with a shoestring tackle.
“I’m just competitive,’’ Jenkins said of his futile chase that left him and Robinson sprawled on the ground. “I’d run that far, so I might as well try to get him down. I didn’t want to hurt him so I didn’t dive on him. I just tried to click his heels. It’s our competitive nature. We just want to win. He showed me a little more speed than I thought. He’s definitely an explosive player, just the way he gets in and out of holes and in and out of his cuts.’’
STILL SIDELINED: RB Chris Ivory (foot), CB Tracy Porter (knee) and DE Greg Romeus (knee) remain on the Failed Physical list.
DID NOT PRACTICE: LB Ezra Butler (hamstring), WR Jarred Fayson (ankle), WR Adrian Arrington (ankle), CB Fabian Washington (hamstring), T Alex Barron (knee), WR Marques Colston (knee), DT Mitch King (heart/chest). LB Ramon Humber (quadriceps) and CB Johnny Patrick (wrist)Â sustained minor injuries during practice.
