METAIRIE - The New Orleans Saints have added veteran free agent running back Patrick Cobbs to their roster.
Cobbs fills a void left by the absence of running back Joique Bell, who is out an estimated 2-3 weeks with a knee injury suffered in the Saints' preseason win last Friday over the San Francisco 49ers. The Saints indicate that Bell has a strained posterior cruciate ligament.
A five year NFL veteran out of North Texas, Cobbs (o played in 54 games with the Miami Dolphins including three starts.
Cobbs was awarded the 2010 Ed Block Courage Award as voted by his Dolphins teammates. The annual award, which has members of every NFL team select one of their teammates, is awarded to those who are "role models of inspiration, sportsmanship, and courage."

Notes: Had a solid season as a senior, rushing for 1,154 yards on 231 carries and scored six touchdowns...Has decent bulk and low center of gravity...Led the nation in rushing in 2003 season (1,570) and ranked in the top six in rushing touchdowns (17) and all-purpose yards (1,661)...Has seen his stock decline since 2003 after losing almost all of 2004 season to injury...Shared the backfield with Jamario Thomas in 2005...Could be a sleeper in the draft...Will probably be a special teams contributor and used for spot running duties.
