One main cog and the star of training camp in the New Orleans Saints' offensive machine are hurting.
Saints head coach Sean Payton said that wide receiver Lance Moore tweaked his groin on Wednesday and he sat out Thursday's practice at Oxnard, California. Payton added that Moore is not expected to play on Sunday night at Oakland and his status for the preseason finale on September 1 at home against Tennessee is uncertain.
Training camp and preseason sensation Joe Morgan was also injured at practice Wednesday. An MRI revealed a meniscus injury in his knee, according to Payton.
Payton stated that the undrafted rookie will likely be out from two to four weeks. That could impact the final roster decision at wide receiver to begin the regular season. While Moore figures to be a go on September 8 at Green Bay, Morgan may not be ready to play.
As a result, Courtney Roby's stock just rose. A special teams standout and kick return man who is fighting for a roster spot, Roby is step closer to making the 53-man roster.
In other injury news, Roman Harper suffered a small fracture on his right hand. Though it not serious, Payton said the starting strong safety will likely miss the Oakland game.
Payton said he would play his starters at least one half against the Raiders Sunday night, possibly into the third quarter, depending on snaps and how the game is going.
Mark Ingram will play after missing practice time earlier in the week. Linebacker Will Herring, who started against the Texans, returned to practice. He had missed time with a calf bruise after being leg-whipped in the Houston game.
While all of the players have praised the conditions (weather) and camp at Oxnard, Jabari Greer said that he misses home and family, noting that while it gets hot in the New Orleans that the fans make it worthwhile here.
16 players missed practice Thursday.
Thursday's practice was highlighted by a small fight which involved players on the offense and defense, a sign that this team may be getting close to being ready for the regular season.
On the Oakland front, the Raiders have signed Terrelle Pryor to a four-year deal. He is expected to practice with the team on Friday. Pryor was a third-round pick in the NFL Supplemental Draft by the Raiders on Monday.
Raiders coach Hue Jackson has confirmed that Pryor will be a quarterback with Oakland, dispelling rumors of a position change.
Jackson gave the Raiders off on Thursday. They return to practice today for final preparations for the Saints' game.
Tickets are still available for the game Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
