Saints cuts include DE Alex Brown; 10 others waived

The New Orleans Saints have trimmed their roster by 10 players down to 80. An expected starter is on the cut list.

Defensive end Alex Brown delivered the news Tuesday to followers via his Twitter account:

"It saddens me to say that I have been released from the Saints because their (sic) a first class organization."

The 32-year old Brown spent one season with the Saints, starting at the left defensive end spot in 2010. However, it was clear his days were numbered when New Orleans used their first round pick (24th overall) to select Cam Jordan to compete primarily at Brown's spot.

“It was a hard decision.  We spent a lot of time on it," said Saints coach Sean Payton. "A lot goes into it, and I said this to him today, (that) it wasn’t that we drafted a young player at that position.  I think you try to factor in all the practice snaps and all the game film."

The offseason addition of veteran end Turk McBride and the emergence of second-year player Junior Galette also appear to have contributed to the end of Brown's short New Orleans tenure.

"It was something that after going through it all and looking at the timing of it, there’s still that opportunity within this next week that he’ll have a chance to sign with someone else and also that door is not totally shut if that opportunity presents itself here," noted Payton.

He broke into the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2008 as a member of the San Francisco 49ers and also has played with the UFL's Las Vegas entry.
