The New Orleans Saints dropped running back Joique Bell from the active roster to clear room for defensive end Will Smith.
Bell was added to the practice squad Thursday after clearing waivers. The Saints released RB Tristan Davis to make room for Bell.
Signed during the 2010 season after a rash of injuries at the running back spot, Bell starred with the Saints this past preseason. He tallied a team-high 182 yards on 31 carries (5.9 yard/run) and scored one touchdown.
The 25-year old Wayne State product was fourth on the depth chart in New Orleans behind rookie Mark Ingram and veterans Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles. Saints head coach Sean Payton also said Monday that he expects second-year pro Chris Ivory to be 100 percent when he is elligible to come off the PUP list after week six.
Smith, suspended for the first two games of the season after violating the NFL’s banned substance policy in the infamous StarCaps incident of 2008, is expected to move back into his starting right defensive end spot for New Orleans' game Sunday versus the Houston Texans at the Superdome.
