New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton suffered a broken tibia and torn MCL (medial collateral ligament) in his left knee following a collision along the sideline early in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The extent of his injuries were first reported by Fox on the television halftime show.
Saints tight end Jimmy Graham caught a pass near the New Orleans sideline before being tackled by a Bucs defender. Graham was driven into Payton, who fell to the ground upon contact. The team medical staff treated him on the spot before placing him on the bench.
Payton went to the locker room and had X-rays before halftime. He planned initially to coach the second half of the game from the booth but could not make it.
Multiple reports indicate Payton will have surgery first thing Monday morning in New Orleans.
