Sean Payton confirmed through Fox Sports Television that the University of Georgia's Todd Grantham is coming in this evening to interview for the New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator job. He also confirmed that former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will also interview for the job.
Payton was interviewed by Fox Sports Television during the telecast of the New Orleans Hornets-Phoenix Suns contest at New Orleans Arena, where Payton was in attendance Wednesday evening.
Grantham said earlier Wednesday that he expects to remain at Georgia but would not comment on the possibility of joining the Saints. Grantham is highly thought of. He was linked to a possible job with the Atlanta Falcons a year ago but remained at Georgia. Grantham has been Georgia's defensive coordinator since 2010.
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Friday that the Saints talked to Grantham on Thursday and planned to speak with Ryan Friday. Grantham then announced Friday that he has pulled himself out of consideration for the New Orleans opening. The team, which may talk to one more candidate, plans to wrap up the interview process by Tuesday, according to Rapoport.
Ryan has served as a defensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns, Oakland Raiders and the Cowboys. Payton stated earlier on Wednesday on the "Mike and Mike" show on ESPN Radio that he may interview two to four candidates for the position though he did not specify who they were, other than Ryan.
