The New Orleans Saints have started the efforts to lower their salary cap figure ahead of the start of free agency.
Linebacker Curtis Lofton has restructured the contract he signed as a free agent last offseason, according to ESPN.com and NOLA.com.
Lofton's cap figure was scheduled to be $7.1 million in 2013 but the Saints were able to drop that number to $3.1 million by replacing a scheduled $5 million roster bonus with a $5 million signing bonus that will be prorated over the remainder of the contract, according to ESPN's Pat Yasinskas.
The Saints would have been around $20 million over the salary cap before the Lofton move.
After leaving the Atlanta Falcons last offseason by signing a five-year, $27.5 million contract in New Orleans, Lofton led the team with 123 tackles.
