Many thought the arrival of first rounder Kenny Vaccaro signaled bad news for Roman Harper with the New Orleans Saints. Rumors of his demise were greatly exaggerated.
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Friday that Harper has signed a contract extension that guarantees him $4 million for 2013 althought the eight year pro was scheduled to earn $5.25 million this season. The contract is reported to have added a year (2015) on to Harper's contract, providing cap relief for the Saints. Harper in his previous deal was to make a $6 million base salary with a cap number of $7.9 million for 2014.
Harper and fellow safety Malcom Jenkins will battle Vaccaro, the 15th overall selection out of Texas, for playing time in new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan's defense.
Harper, 30, was a second round Saints picks out of Alabama in 2006. Playing in 16 games in 2012, Harper registered 115 combined tackles, two interceptions and 11 passes defensed.
