Once you have caught up on the first and second parts of this reflection on Black & Gold misery, take a walk down memory lane for some more difficult games that did not finish how the Saints and their fans would have hoped over the years.
Saints take fourth quarter lead on 27-yard Morten Andersen field goal before Packers QB Brett Favre throws a 54-yard pass to WR Sterling Sharpe to set up the winning Chris Jacke 36-yard field goal with three seconds left.
#44--10/26/2003—vs Panthers--23-20 in Overtime
Saints lead 17-10 at half but later tied at 20-20 on John Carney 42-yard field goal with :36 left in regulation. In overtime, RB Deuce McAllister fumbled on 4th down, resulting in the winning Carolina 31-yard field goal.
Saints score 17 unanswered 4th quarter points to take a 20-14 lead. Vikings QB Warren Moon then leads an 84-yard drive resulting in a 11-yard touchdown pass to WR Qadry Ismail with five seconds left.
Saints were up by seven going into 4th quarter, but Fred McAfee's fumble resulted in the Chargers' tying touchdown by RB Marion Butts. On the game's last play, San Diego wins with John Carney's 19-yard field goal.
Vikings take 23-0 lead into 3rd quarter before the Saints gradually come back. A go-ahead touchdown near game's end is nullified by a penalty. The Saints then try tying via a Benny Ricardo field goal on last play but the kick is blocked.
Each team has three turnovers in rain-slick conditions. Cowboys RB Dan Reeves fumbles with under a minute to go, and following Saints drive reaches the Dallas 6-yard line where on last play QB Billy Kilmer fumbles the ball away.
Saints defensive end Joe Johnson recovers a fumble with 3:22 to go. The Saints try to tie the game on last play but a touchdown pass from Aaron Brooks to WR Willie Jackson is nullified by an offensive pass interference penalty.
#38--09/23/2012—vs Chiefs--27-24 Overtime
In a game marred with mistakes by replacement officials, the Saints lead 24-6 in the 3rd quarter before the Chiefs score 21 straight points including a 91-yard touchdown run by Jammal Charles. Ryan Succop nailed a 31-yard kick to win the game in overtime.
#37--11/13/1977—vs 49ers--10-7 Overtime
In a defensive struggle, Rich Szaro misses a field goal attempt with under two minutes in regulation. The 49ers come back in the extra period to win on a 33-yard Ray Wersching field goal.
Saints take the lead on a Kerry Collins touchdown pass to TE Cam Cleeland with 1:22 to go. With the winner maintaining their playoff chances, the Cardinals led by Jake Plummer drive from their own 7-yard line including two huge pass plays to set up the winning Chris Jacke 41-yard field goal.
The Saints drive inside 49ers 20-yard line with under two minutes left but three straight Bobby Hebert passes fell incomplete. Two bad official calls gave San Francisco scores (missed TE Carl Wilson and WR Jerry Rice fumbles)
Saints give up 11-point 4th quarter lead on Jerome Barkum's touchdown catch and Kirk Springs punt return for a score. On the last Saints drive, Morten Andersen misses a field goal attempt on last play, leaving the Saints still winless on Monday Night in their history.
49ers QB Steve Young throws the winning touchdown pass to TE Brent Jones with 46 seconds to go. The Saints then try to move into field goal range but on last play tackle Richard Cooper is hit late as a ball carrier but no flag is thrown.
#32—01/03/1993—vs Eagles (Wild Card Playoff)—36-20
Saints lead 20-10 with 11:00 to go. The comes a collapse. The Eagles score 26 unanswered points including a defensive end Reggie White safety and an Eric Allen 18-yard interception touchdown return. It was also the last Jim Mora-era playoff game.
#31—09/16/1973—vs Falcons 62-7
This game marks the worst margin of defeat in Saints history comes to their archrival. Some feel that the embarrassing offensive performance (187 total yards and eight turnovers) was due to team's struggles to understand new head coach John North's intricate play calling system.
