Robert Meachem will re-sign with the New Orleans Saints a year after leaving the team as a big ticket free agent, sources tell sportsNOLA.com.
Terms of the contract are not known, but the roster spot opening to make room for Meachem comes from the loss of linebacker Jonathan Vilma. The Saints placed the veteran defensive captain on the injured reserve/designated to return list.
The former first round pick in 2008 by New Orleans was a flop with the San Diego Chargers, catching 14 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns during the 2012 season before failing to make the final roster for the AFC West squad this preseason. The Chargers paid the former Tennessee Vols star $5 million in guaranteed money when they cut ties last week.
In four years with the Saints, Meachem hauled in 141 passes for 2,269 yards and 23 touchdowns as a part-time starter. He earned a Super Bowl ring in 2009.
The Saints add an experienced hand to the receiver corps for Drew Brees with the signing. Three of the five wideouts on the 53-man roster (Kenny Stills, Nick Toon and Andy Tanner) before the Meachem move lack any NFL experience, much less time spent in the New Orleans pass-happy offense.
