Tulane’s Vyskocilova Upsets Nation’s 31st-ranked Player at ITA All-American Championships

Green Wave doubles tandem of Magnusson, Thornton advances to second round

New Orleans – Tulane junior Klara Vyskocilova scored a huge upset in her first major tournament in a Green Wave uniform with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 victory over fifth-seeded and No. 31-ranked Tayler Davis of California-Berkeley during the singles qualifying round of the 2012 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Vyskocilova wasn’t the only Tulane player to find the win column during Tuesday’s opening rounds of singles and doubles. The Wave’s senior tandem of Caroline Magnusson and Caroline Thornton upended Santa Clara’s Jessica Agra and Katie Le in the first round, 8-4, and will play Texas A&M’s second-seeded duo of Cristina Sanchez and Cristina Stancu today at 12 p.m. CST.

“We are thrilled for Klara with her huge win against the fifth seed and 31st-ranked player in the country,” Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. “It was a battle on the court and one that was fun to watch due to the level of ball striking. Klara is a true example of playing with heart, never giving in and playing to win. I expect more wins of this caliber for her all year.”

Following her opening round victory over Davis, Vyskocilova was knocked out in the second round last night with a three-set loss to Lina Lileikite of Miami, Fla., 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
