Santos is one of 20 of the top kickers in the nation to make the list
New Orleans – The Palm Beach County Sports Commission has released the 20 semifinalists for the 2013 Lou Groza Collegiate Place‐Kicker Award presented by the Orange Bowl Committee and Tulane senior kicker Cairo Santos is a semifinalist for the second straight year.
Santos, the 2012 Lou Groza Award winner, is one of only five returning semifinalists to make the list. Santos is joined by Northwestern senior Jeff Budzien, Arkansas State senior Brian Davis, Oklahoma senior Michael Hunnicutt, and Texas senior Anthony Fera, who was a semifinalist in 2011 while at Penn State.
A native of Brasilia, Brazil, Santos has knocked down 13-of-17 field goal attempts and all 27 of his PAT attempts for 66 points. He has two game-winners (North Texas, East Carolina) and is tied for the longest field goal in the nation this season with a 56-yarder at ULM. Of his four misses, one was blocked (Syracuse), he missed a pair of 50+ yarders (56 vs. North Texas/55 vs. East Carolina) and a 46-yard attempt at ULM.
He also handles kickoff duties and has sent 33 of 45 into the back of the end zone. TU's opponents' average starting yard line has been the 25 this season.
The 20 semifinalists joining Santos include Roberto Aguayo (Florida State), Budzien, Ryan Bustin (Texas Tech), Brad Craddock (Maryland), Vincenzo D'Amato (California), Davis, Jeremiah Detmer (Toldeo), Jake Elliott (Memphis), Fera, Zane Gonzalez (Arizona State), Chase Hover (SMU), Hunnicutt, Marvin Kloss (South Florida), Shawn Moffitt (UCF), Marshall Morgan (Georgia), Will Oliver (Colorado), Andy Phillips (Utah), Jared Roberts (Colorado State), Niklas Sade (North Carolina State).
Semifinalists will be voted on by FBS Head Coaches and SIDs, past Groza finalists, and national and regional football writers to select the three finalists. These finalists will be announced on November 25 and honored at the 22nd annual Lou Groza Collegiate Place‐Kicker Awards Banquet on December 10 in West Palm Beach, Florida. The winner will be announced live on ESPN at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Thursday, December 12.
Tulane will play at Texas-San Antonio on Nov. 9 before returning to New Orleans to close out the home portion of the 2013 regular season against UTEP on Nov. 23.
