UNO's Maestri adds Blake Dean as volunteer baseball coach

New UNO head baseball coach Ron Maestri has hired former LSU star Blake Dean as his volunteer coach with the Privateers, has learned.

Dean spent the 2013 season as an undergraduate assistant at LSU while completing his bachelor's degree requirements.

A star for the Tigers from 2007-10, Dean helped lead LSU to the College World Series championship in 2009.

In his illustrious college career, Dean was one of the most accomplished hitters in LSU history. He finished second in three career categories, including total bases (575), RBI (260) and hits (332). Dean is third all-time in career doubles (63), fourth in home runs (56) and fifth in runs scored (223).

Dean was a Freshman All-American in 2007, earned FIrst-Team All-American Honors in 2008 when he hit .353 with 20 home runs and 73 RBI in 67 games. He was a First-Team All-SEC performer in 2009. He led LSU in RBI in all four of his seasons at LSU and topped the Tigers in batting average in 2007 and 2008.

Drafted in the eighth round by the Los Angeles Dodgers following his senior season, Dean played parts of two seasons in the minor leagues. The native of Crestview, FL hit .263 with 32 doubles, 12 home runs and 79 RBI in 155 games for Ogden (Rookie League and Great Lakes (Single-A) combined in 2010 and 2011 before deciding to retire.

Dean joins holdovers James Jurries (hitting coach) and Justin Garcia (director of baseball operations) on Maestri's staff from the previous staff of Bruce Peddie. Garcia served as pitching coach a year ago. Maestri is expected to announce his new pitching coach soon.
