Looking for some of the Florida (soon-to-be-Miami) Marlins’ top prospects? It's unlikely you'll see them at Zephyr Field in 2012.
Baseball America released its list of the top 10 Marlins’ prospects Wednesday, and only two have ever played above Class A – third baseman Matt Dominguez (No. 4), who spent most of last season with the Z’s, and outfielder Scott Cousins (No. 9), who played in New Orleans in 2010 and began last year with the Marlins, but spent much of the season on the disabled list with a lower back strain.
The Marlins’ top prospect, according to BA, is outfielder Christian Yelich, who hit .317 with 17 home runs, 75 RBI and 32 stolen bases in leading the organization’s low Class A affiliate, Greensboro, to the South Atlantic League championship. Four of Greensboro’s regulars rank among the top eight on BA’s prospect list.
With the talent gap in the higher portion of the minor-league system, expect the Marlins to sign veteran free agents to fill the void in New Orleans and perhaps Class AA Jacksonville.
